If you're talking about Toji, it wasn't. It was constantly hinted at that he's the 4th child throughout the episodes, and with how Eva is with it's story telling, it wasn't just going to tell it to you outright.

Why did Asuka didnt outright tell him?

She had multiple opportunities, so does Rei.

Hinting such a obvious twist is not a part of good story telling unless they were going to do some kind of unexpected twist

If you're going to be this pedantic over inconsequential details that make sense if you actually try to relate to the characters, you can just stop watching. It was an open secret to the audience that Toji was the 4th child, it doesn't need to be a twist if it's intended to affect Shinji in some way.
